About Saint Cloud, FL From the Web…
“St. Cloud, a midsize, family-oriented city near Orlando, was founded on April 16, 1909, as a retirement community for Civil War Union veterans who paid $50 for five-acre lots. The birth of modern day St. Cloud is possible through the aspirations of several men, including Hamilton Disston, who began visiting Florida from Philadelphia on fishing trips in the 1870s.”
“During the late 1800’s, settlers who came to what is now St. Cloud were primarily involved with the works of Hamilton Disston. This Philadelphia entrepreneur had contracted with the State of Florida in 1881 to drain the swamps of Central Florida and the overflowed lands south of Orlando which included the present-day St. Cloud area. For the incredible price of $1 million, Disston, heir to the Henry Disston & Sos Saw Works, the largest manufacturer of saws and files in the U.S., received approximately four million acres. Disston brought engineers and workers to the area to dredge the canals.”
