With a total angle of 20 to 34 degrees, this is still a very fine edge. This edge is typically too weak for any knife that might be used in any type of chopping motion. If your knife is used for cutting soft items or slicing meats, this lower angle can hold up and provide a very smooth cutting action.

German knives use slightly “softer” steel, but have more material behind their cutting edge. For the average user, a German-style knife is easier to sharpen, but a Santoku knife, if used as designed, will hold miniature wood carving tools its edge longer. If you’re already comfortable with using the rocking motion with chef’s knives, then I would recommend sticking with them. Any edged tool or knife that is sharpened past 30 degrees will be very durable. This durability has an advantage because more force can be used to make the cut. While the majority of knives won’t benefit from this sharpening angle, an edged tool like a machete, cleaver or axe must be durable as the typical cutting action of these tools would damage other edges. A sharpening angle of 10 to 17 degrees is still quite low for most knives.

  • With beautifully sculpted handles, a razor-sharp blade, and a deft fork, the Ikon set is a wonderful tool—and a special gift.
  • I’m brand new at this and have decided to do something with my time.

The curved blade of a chef’s knife is perfect for rocking back and forth across a cutting board to chop a lot of vegetables. Its long, sharp edge is also good for slicing or chopping meats and for separating chicken parts. It’s a versatile knife design and it’s ideal for speed and efficiency in a professional cooking environment. I use a chef’s knife for everything I do in the kitchen other than peeling potatoes and slicing bread.

We’d have preferred the cord to have been a bit longer, but again manufacturers are often very aware of health and safety. This electric carving knife is very easy on the ear, certainly not silent, but very quiet compared to others on the market. I used to do a lot of prep work at a restaurant, including chopping vegetables for hours every day. A classic Santoku will incorporate the Western-style, bilateral cutting edge, but maintain a more extreme 12 to 15 degree shoulder, akin to Japanese cutlery. It is critical to increase the hardness https://bestwoodcarvingtool.com/7-best-wood-carving-kits/ of Santoku steel so edge retention is maintained and “rolling” of the thin cutting edge is mitigated. The plastic sheaf for the straight blade is great for keeping the blade from being dinged when in storage.

The tool kit is small; I do most of the work with a hatchet and a few knives. Add some splitting tools and a rough saw for crosscutting the blank.

That’s not to say the finished product won’t look great because it all boils down to how you use your tools. It is a single edge steel blade, which some of you might shrug at and keep reading or you might rule this option out completely.

Contacting local tree surgeons, parks and nature conservation organisations is a good place to start. While almost any hardwood is suitable for making spoons I would recommend starting with birch. Birch is a fast growing genus common to many parts of the world and easy to identify from its often white, peeling bark. The wood is easy to carve, but hard enough to give a good finish once it dries.

I was loving how that felt on the handles, so I decided to make a gooseneck card scraper to clean out the inside of the bowls. I’m still pretty new to spoon carving, so learning all the nuances with the grain direction is a super fun process.

  • I would however encourage beginners to try as many different woods as they can as even within different parts of the same tree there can be variances in how well a piece carves.
  • The end of the handle can either sweep back down a bit, or take one last lift upwards again.
  • It is a lovely pale golden colour, without much difference between the heartwood and sapwood.
  • The suggested retail for the Single Bevel Sloyd Hook Knife is $74.95, the Double Bevel Sloyd Hook Knife is $79.95, and the Spoon Carvin’ Jack is $124.95.
  • Thanks again Chris for the great value and attention to detail with your tools.
  • That way an errant blow from the hatchet doesn’t glance off the stump into my leg.

These are either sawn or chopped with my hatchet. Now I can chop down the handle’s outline without risk of hitting the end grain of the bowl and splitting it. After sketching the outline of the spoon on top of the blank, make relief cuts with a saw or hatchet to where the bowl meets the handle. I’ll begin with a serving spoon from a fairly straight blank.

I’ll get to the blade last, but FIRST the handle is made of hardwood oak that is processed with organic linseed oil. Something I noticed about the handle is that both ends have rounded tapered edges which is a pretty generic way of shaping handheld tools. Reason being is because it makes carving for long periods of time less strenuous on the hands and real easy to get a good grip. The fantastic thing about carving wooden spoons is that the tools you need are very basic. Most simply you need a saw and several sharp wedges (an axe, a knife and a hollowing tool).

The Straight Blade Knife is used primarily for shaping the back of the spoon, the neck, and the handle. All 3 tools have traditional birch wood handles. The ideal set for carving spoons, bowls, cups and relief carvings. Both knives boast ergonomic oiled birch handles and premium-quality steel.

MStein Spoon knife 20mm LH

If you are starting out with the addictive hobby of spoon carving and are unsure which one to get we recommend the 35mm curve as a good general purpose curve. The distinction between Left and Right hand here is the Right hand knives are held right handed and pulled towards you. If you prefer to work right handed but want push away to cut then you should order the Left Handed knife. The best quality and best value spoon hollowing knives you can get. These complement the straight bladed whittling knives very nicely.

In practice, while the radiuses of the two blades match those of the Sloyd hook knives, I did not find them as easy to use as the full-size versions. The curves are fairly slight in such short blades, making it harder to dig deeply into the spoon bowl. That said, if you simply carve shallower spoon bowls when you’re working in the wild, the Spoon Carvin’ Jack will enable you to whittle by the campfire to your heart’s content. It’s a small price to pay for the portability, safety, and convenience of an all-in-one spoon tool that will fit in your pocket or pack. Left-handed carvers should also be aware that the single-bevel hook knife may be uncomfortable to use and consider the double-bevel version instead.

I mostly use the righty, but there are places and times when the left-handed version is helpful. To shape the inside of the spoon’s bowl, you can use a hook knife or the gouge. For my first spoons, I hollowed the bowl with a gouge (mine has a No. 8 sweep in the Swiss-made numbering system). Just as with the straight knife, you want to use your body and hands in such a way that you can cut efficiently, without having the tool’s edge land in your flesh.

A single edge blade can be tough or a dream to work with because it limits left handed people to only push cuts or strictly pull cuts for right handed people. This is the one tool where I’m going to give several options. I really like the open sweep and the size is great for a wide variety of spoon bowls. I would advise staying away from the Mora spoon knives (162 and 164).
