Why do I need a DNA test?
There are many reasons people seek answers through DNA testing. You are not alone and questions are more common than you think. What is important is getting the answer as quickly as possible so an informed next-step can take place in your particular situation. DNA testing is used for many purposes, including:
- Paternity establishment
- Unknown or unsure parentage
- Completion of the Acknowledgement or Affidavit of Paternity
- Child support or child custody
- Social Security or Military child survivor benefits if the alleged father is deceased
- Inheritance
- Relieve family rumors
- Immigration
- Adoption or surrogate parent biological confirmation
- Native American tribal enrollment
- Infidelity confirmation
- Auto accident or other investigations
- Forensic DNA for criminal purposes
- Drug or DWI test sample confirmations
Who needs to be tested in a paternity test?
Ideally the mother, child and alleged father should all be tested. We know the mother contributed one-half of her DNA to the child, which is matched up to the child's genetic profile. The remaining DNA must then match the alleged father. However, we can obtain accurate results without mother's sample if she is not available.
What kind of samples are used for testing?
DNA Services of America prefers to use a cotton-tipped swab, commonly called a "cheek swab". It is collected by swabbing the inside cheek of the mouth. It is painless, non-invasive and the results are just as accurate as blood samples since the DNA in every nucleated cell in your body is the same. Other biological samples are acceptable, including a tube of blood or drops of blood on a bloodstain card when appropriate.
How accurate are the tests?
The test results provided by DNA Services of America are accurate. We routinely release test results with a probability of paternity of 99.9% or higher; or, 100% probability in cases which exclude the alleged father. In addition, our contracted laboratory tests each sample twice, following the highest standards in quality control, unprecedented in the DNA testing industry.
Where are our samples collected?
We make the sample collection process as easy and convenient for you as possible. Your local service center will either arrange an appointment at their facility or can come to you on a mobile basis. We can even come to the hospital as early as the day of birth of the child.
What if tested parties live in different cities?
DNA Services of America will arrange for all parties' samples to be collected in their respective cities. All samples will be coordinated as one case when they arrive at the laboratory.
How long does it take to get paternity test results?
Once the samples are collected and the test has been paid in full, it typically takes three (3) to five (5) business days to complete the test and report the results. Next-day RUSH testing is also available.
Can I use DNA Services of America's results in court?
Yes. The results from our Legally-Admissible Test is a report that is an evidence document that proves or disproves paternity if sample collections are performed by a disinterested third party using proper chain-of-custody procedures and forms through an AABB accredited laboratory.
What form of payment does DNA Services of America accept?
You may pay for your test with cash, a personal check, cashier's check, money order or credit card (VISA, MasterCard, Discover or American Express).
